On a recent Price of Business, Host Kevin Price visited with Diana Furchtgott-Roth.
This week, economist Diana Furchtgott-Roth testified before the House Natural Resources Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, urging lawmakers to safeguard what she described as America’s path toward “energy supremacy.” As Director of the Center for Energy, Climate, and Environment at the Heritage Foundation and a former senior economic official in multiple administrations, Furchtgott-Roth brought both policy experience and academic perspective to the hearing.
She argued that the United States is already energy independent thanks to its vast oil and natural gas reserves, combined with advanced production technologies. In her view, the challenge is not supply, but regulatory pressure. She cautioned that stringent EPA rules on vehicles and power plants could undermine domestic production, raise costs, and weaken U.S. competitiveness. Furchtgott-Roth emphasized that strong domestic energy capacity is not only an economic asset but also a geopolitical tool, giving the U.S. leverage in trade and international relations.
At the same time, she acknowledged the importance of balance. Environmental goals, she said, are legitimate, but should not come at the expense of affordable and reliable energy. Her testimony framed “energy supremacy” as ensuring America remains the global leader in energy production while crafting policies that protect both prosperity and security.
Diana Furchtgott-Roth is director of the Center for Energy, Climate, and Environment and the Herbert and Joyce Morgan Fellow in Energy and Environmental Policy at The Heritage Foundation. She is an Oxford-educated economist, a frequent guest on TV and radio shows, and a columnist for the Daily Telegraph. She has served as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Research and Technology at the U.S. Department of Transportation; Acting Assistant Secretary for Economic Policy at the U.S. Department of Treasury; Chief Economist at the U.S. Department of Labor; Chief of Staff of the President’s Council of Economic Advisers; and Deputy Executive Secretary of the White House Domestic Policy Council. Diana is the author or coauthor of six books and hundreds of articles on economic policy, most recently United States Income, Wealth, Consumption, and Inequality (Oxford University Press, 2021).
