End of Government Shutdown Covered Like Sports
INTERVIEW ON THE PRICE OF BUSINESS SHOW, MEDIA PARTNER OF THIS SITE.
Recently Kevin Price, Host of the nationally syndicated Price of Business Show, interviewed David Dozier who is a leading media authority.

On a recent Price of Business show, Host Kevin Price interviewed David Dozier, professor emeritus of journalism at San Diego State University. They discussed news coverage of the end of the federal government shutdown. The events were widely covered like a sporting event: Who won? Who lost? This type of reporting covers tactics, not strategy. The tactical, play-by-play bottom line: The Democrats caved. The GOP got everything they wanted. The play-by-play style of reporting is easier to do. It’s also less likely to raise the ire of President Trump. Reporters and some editors honor their commitment to serve as watchdogs on government and industry. But billionaire owners at legacy media like The Washington Post and The Los Angeles Times have caved to Trump in order to protect their other business interests. But what have Trump, MAGA, and the GOP actually won? The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimates that Trump’s 2025 budget cuts about $186 billion from the SNAP food stamps program through 2034. According to the CBO, Trump’s approved budget will slash 7.5 million people from Medicaid coverage by 2034. About 24 million Americans depend on federal subsidies through the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare). According to the nonprofit, nonpartisan KFF, subsidized enrollees in Obamacare will see an average increase in premiums from $888 in 2025 to $1,904 in 2026, a 114% increase. According to KFF, 57 percent of Obamacare enrollees live in GOP congressional districts. A few news outlets have published news and commentary on strategy. Strategically, Trump’s budget hurts the health and nutrition of poor people in MAGA congressional districts. All GOP congresspersons and some GOP senators will enter their Nov. 2026 campaigns with the Trump budget albatross around their necks. Was this albatross the Democrats’ strategy all along? Highly unlikely. The GOP had a bad strategy. The Democrats had no strategy at all (see www.DavidDozierBooks.com and www.linkedin.com/in/david-dozier-576b684/).
