Houston Congressman Wesley Hunt (R-TX-38) has upended the 2026 Republican Senate primary, entering a race that had been shaping up as a showdown between Sen. John Cornyn and Attorney General Ken Paxton. A West Point graduate and former Army Apache pilot, Hunt brings youth, polish, and strong backing from the party’s donor class — including ties to national conservative fundraising networks that view him as a bridge between Trump-aligned voters and establishment Republicans.
His entry scrambles the field. Paxton, long seen as the populist favorite, now faces a disciplined conservative who shares many of his policy views but none of his legal baggage. Cornyn, in the Senate since 2002, must navigate attacks from both his right and center, with Hunt poised to peel away suburban conservatives who respect Cornyn’s experience but want generational change.
The result is a race likely headed for a runoff, as early polling already shows Hunt quickly gaining traction behind the two frontrunners. His strong ground operation, media savvy, and broad fundraising appeal could make him a serious contender — and potentially the candidate who redefines the Texas GOP’s post-Paxton future.
In short: Hunt’s candidacy turns a binary contest into a three-way free for all.
