INTERVIEW ON THE PRICE OF BUSINESS SHOW, MEDIA PARTNER OF THIS SITE.

Recently Kevin Price, Host of the nationally syndicated Price of Business Show, interviewed David Dozier who is a leading media authority.

On a recent Price of Business show, Host Kevin Price interviewed Dr. David Dozier. He’s professor emeritus of journalism at San Diego State. They discussed the fear that artificial intelligence (AI) will take away jobs from news reporters. That’s already happened in Cleveland. The Cleveland Plain Dealer now uses reporters to gather information and feed notes and quotes into its new “rewrite desk.” The “rewrite desk” is a generative AI robot. It writes entire news stories from reporters’ notes. According to The Plain Dealer editor Chris Quinn, the AI “rewrite desk” is just another reporter’s “tool.” But reporters do no actual newswriting. The AI “rewrite desk” has stirred a backlash among journalists who have called the innovation “beyond dumb,” turning reporters into “AI content farmers.” Many assert that such use of AI will drive down the quality of journalism, replacing the judgments of experienced reporters and editors with algorithms. At The Plain Dealer, an editor and the reporter review copy written by the AI “rewrite desk” to catch errors and glitches. Humans control the input and output of the AI “rewrite desk.” That’s an important caveat for any news organization considering using generative AI to write news without human control. In a recent federal court decision (Thaler vs. Perlmutter), the District of Columbia Court of Appeals ruled that any content generated entirely by generative AI is not subject to copyright protection. The U.S. Supreme Court declined to consider an appeal of that decision. Thus, if news organizations decide to wholly automate newswriting with generative AI, that news organization will have no copyright protection for the news its robot generates (see www.DavidDozierBooks.com and www.linkedin.com/in/david-dozier-576b684/).
