INTERVIEW ON THE PRICE OF BUSINESS SHOW, MEDIA PARTNER OF THIS SITE.

Recently Kevin Price, Host of the nationally syndicated Price of Business Show, interviewed David Dozier who is a leading media authority.

Quality journalism requires skilled journalists and lots of money. The internet provides a vast array of tools for collecting information, editing it and distributing news to consumers. Generative Artificial Intelligence, or Gen-AI, is an emerging but poorly understood innovation. It can threaten and enhance quality journalism. Gen-AI consists of secret algorithms that take existing text, audio, video and other digital files as input to “train” a computer to produce “new” content. This “new” content is better described as content that “mimics” the creative works and intellectual property of humans. It’s not original or new. A key problem is that most of these AI training files are pirated from copyright holders. The input for gen-AI takes the creative works and intellectual property of humans—without permission or compensation. This is theft. Such theft is a problem for news management to solve. On the labor side, gen-AI could free up journalists from mundane, repetitive tasks to do more beat and investigative reporting, for example. When used right, gen-AI makes journalists more productive. But will management take this increased productivity to create higher-quality journalism? Or will news managers use gen-AI to reduce staff and news quality by demanding “more with less?” (DavidDozierBooks.com)
