Arrest of Mahmoud Khalil Is an Attack on Free Speech
INTERVIEW ON THE PRICE OF BUSINESS SHOW, MEDIA PARTNER OF THIS SITE.
Recently Kevin Price, Host of the nationally syndicated Price of Business Show, interviewed David Dozier who is a leading media authority.
On March 8, ICE arrested a Columbia University activist of Palestinian heritage and whisked him off to a prison in Louisiana. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said the arrest and threatened deportation of Mahmoud Khalil is “not about free speech.” Of course, the arrest of Khalil is another Trumpian effort to suppress free speech. This week, the Trump administration tried to sidestep the issue by claiming that Khalil failed to mention his work for the UK and the UN, as well as membership in a Columbia University student group that seeks to divest Columbia’s investments in Israel and its occupied territories. Mr. Khalil was a leader at Columbia University last year when anger at Israel’s slaughter of Palestinian civilians enraged Muslim and Jewish students. Mr. Khalil is a permanent U.S. resident (green card). He’s married to a U.S. citizen. His wife expects their first baby soon. The Trump administration has not charged him with any crimes. Trump has provided no evidence that Mr. Khalil is a “terrorist supporter,” as Trump claims. Trump accusations are vague and inarticulate. This exerts a “chilling effect” on any non-citizen who dares to challenge Trump’s foreign policy shenanigans that support autocrats like Putin and Israel’s corrupt racist government. In his threats against international students, Trump seeks to exploit low-hanging fruit. He’s denying free speech for vulnerable international students engaged in non-violent protests. But Trump’s long-range target is the First Amendment, which protects free speech and a free press for all Americans (see www.DavidDozierBooks.com and www.linkedin.com/in/david-dozier-576b684/).
