According to Reporters Without Borders, 520 journalists are imprisoned worldwide. Globally, 1,669 journalists have been killed since 1993, according to UNESCO. A dozen have been killed this year. Over 54 percent of these killings are unresolved. The jailing of journalists occurs under authoritarian regimes. Russia and Israel—both ruled by authoritarian leaders—are tied. Under the First Amendment to the Constitution, the U.S. provides sweeping protection for the news media. Donald Trump has referred to the news media as the “enemy of the people.” This is the same playbook used by authoritarian strongmen Vladimir Putin and Benjamin Netanyahu.
