The Good and Bad of Alternative News Media

INTERVIEW ON THE PRICE OF BUSINESS SHOW, MEDIA PARTNER OF THIS SITE.
Recently Kevin Price, Host of the nationally syndicated Price of Business Show, interviewed David Dozier who is a leading media authority.
On a recent Price of Business show, Host Kevin Price interviewed David Dozier. He’s a professor emeritus of journalism at San Diego State University. They discussed the emergence of alternative news media. Conservative columnist Emily Jashinsky argued in The Washington Post that the emergence of podcaster, influencers, and new outlets offer Americans with more options. She spins Trump’s opening up of the White House to right-wing media as honoring his “pledge to keep expanding access.” Like it or not, Americans are getting what passes for news from a variety of alternative information sources. According to the nonpartisan Pew Research Center, traditional news media have experienced a decline in public trust, especially among Republicans. The decline also holds true for trust in the federal government, the Supreme Court, the major political parties and educational institutions. Young people in particular are more open to using social media as news sources. Is this good or bad? That depends. The rules for smart news consumption are universal. Does the alternative news outlet identify content as news or opinion? Does it cite sources of its content? Does it facilitate access to original source documents through links? Most importantly, who pays for the news content? News doesn’t grow on trees. Gathering and editing news is labor intensive and expensive. If the alternative media outlet is a propaganda arm for a political organization (Fox News, for example), then buyer beware!
