Shifting Priorities in U.S. Talent-Based Immigration Policy
INTERVIEW ON THE PRICE OF BUSINESS SHOW, MEDIA PARTNER OF THIS SITE.
Recently Kevin Price, Host of the nationally syndicated Price of Business Show, interviewed Ekaterina Powell.
On a recent Price of Business show, Host Kevin Price interviewed attorney Ekaterina Powell, founder of Powell Immigration Law Firm and a business immigration attorney based in California (www.calivisa.com).
They discussed the shifting priorities in U.S. talent-based immigration policy, focusing on how administrative hurdles slow the entry of highly skilled professionals. Powell explained that while vetting is essential, lengthy processing times, sudden shifts in adjudication trends, and aggressive enforcement can discourage global talent from choosing the United States.
She noted challenges such as workers facing removal for changing employers within the 60-day grace period after a layoff, months-long consular checks, and the risk that even minor oversights, like a late address update with USCIS, can have serious consequences. Petitions for foreign talent often exceed 1,000 pages to meet evidentiary requirements.
Powell emphasized that the U.S. would benefit from greater transparency, streamlined procedures, and clearer communication with agencies. Employers currently pay over $3,500 in government fees per case without assurance of meaningful review. She stressed the need to create pathways, not hurdles, for innovators, entrepreneurs, and exceptionally talented professionals whose contributions strengthen the U.S. economy.
Her message to overseas professionals: understanding immigration law is critical. With the right guidance, clients can adapt to policy shifts and secure opportunities even amid changing rules.”
