The Trump administration’s DOJ withdrew secret subpoenas targeting New York Times journalists on July 23, 2026, following swift pushback from U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian, who criticized prosecutors for bypassing First Amendment protections. While the government backed down to avoid immediate sanctions, the move may be temporary, as the DOJ indicated the national security investigation remains active. The underlying dispute, involving reports that the president’s new, luxury 747-8 lacked critical anti-missile defenses, has raised concerns that the administration prioritized personal comfort over security.
