Assasination Attempts: From National Crisis to Narrative Routine

On a recent Price of Business show, Host Kevin Price interviews former CBS TV Vice President, Jeremy Murphy.
The 1981 assassination attempt on Ronald Reagan triggered a rare moment of American cohesion. Because the assailant’s motives were apolitical, the media focused on Reagan’s resilience, driving a massive surge in national approval. At that time, political violence was viewed as a shocking anomaly that demanded a unified, somber pause.
In contrast, recent attacks on Donald Trump and his administration are met with a more “average” cultural response. In a fragmented media landscape, these events are instantly metabolized into existing partisan frameworks. Coverage often shifts rapidly from the act itself to debates over rhetoric and security, preventing a “rally ’round the flag” effect.
What was once a national trauma is now processed as a routine data point in an ongoing ideological conflict. This shift highlights a fundamental change in the American psyche: extreme events no longer interrupt the political cycle; they are now fuel for it.
