Price and Kaplan look at a hotly contested County Judge race in Harris County, Texas where an incumbent seems very vulnerable.Judge Lina Hidalgo is facing a tough reelection campaign. Her office has faced a lot of controversy in recent months, including the indictment of three former staffers in connection with steering a $11 million contract for vaccine outreach to a preferred vendor. She has denied the allegations and has accused District Attorney Kim Ogg of a political vendetta. Despite the challenges, the incumbent is confident she will win reelection in November. However, some political analysts believe that Hidalgo has miscalculated the optics of her decisions. For example, she stacked the vendor selection committee with three staff members and two health department employees.The criminal investigation into the cancellation of the COVID-19 vaccine outreach contract has cast a shadow over Hidalgo’s ethical image. While the reelection campaign is still early, her stance is a contrast to her Republican opponent’s (Alexandra del Moral Mealer) approach to government.
