Leading Security Expert Believes Putin’s Pressure May Push the EU Toward NATO-Style Defense of Ukraine

On a recent Price of Business show, Host Kevin Price interviewed retired US Marine Colonel and security expert, Eric Buer.

They discussed a recent article he wrote on the unintended consequences of President Putin’s aggressive behavior:

“The European Union, long criticized for its tepid military response to international crises, finds itself at a historical inflection point regarding Ukraine. As Russia continues to escalate its territorial demands while simultaneously insisting that Ukraine remain permanently outside NATO, Vladimir Putin may be inadvertently pushing the EU toward a de facto Article 5-style defense commitment to Kyiv. This strategic miscalculation could not only transform European security architecture but also draw the United States deeper into the conflict, ultimately achieving the opposite of Russia’s stated objectives.”

BIO: Col. Eric Buer (USMC-Ret), author of Ghosts of Baghdad: Marine Corps Gunships on the Opening Days of the Iraq War is currently a senior executive for an aviation and training company. He is also a consultant and public speaker in the areas of military and commercial aviation and global conflict.

Buer, a native Californian, spent his formative years in rural New England before graduating from Ohio Wesleyan University with a degree in economics. After accepting a commission from the Marine Corps, he was trained to fly attack helicopters.  

His deployments took him to the Persian Gulf, Somalia, Bosnia, Iraq, and Afghanistan. He later served on the staff of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs as a professor of national security strategy and policy at the National War College and as an air group commanding officer.
