Media’s Way of Reporting Leads Demonstrations to Becoming Riots
INTERVIEW ON THE PRICE OF BUSINESS SHOW, MEDIA PARTNER OF THIS SITE.
Recently Kevin Price, Host of the nationally syndicated Price of Business Show, interviewed David Dozier who is a leading media authority.
On a recent Price of Business show, Host Kevin Price interviewed Dr. David Dozier. He’s a retired professor of journalism at San Diego State University. They discussed the manufactured illusion that “insurrectionists” are running amok all over Los Angeles. President Trump has deployed 4,000 National Guard members and 700 U.S. Marines to Los Angeles. LA encompasses 500 square miles. Violent conflicts between law enforcement and protesters, according to The Los Angeles Times, actually occurred only within a few city blocks in downtown LA. TV is a visual medium. This creates a structural bias that favors stories with eye-catching video. TV news organizations need large audiences. If stories lack compelling video content, TV editors will likely to weed them out. Trump is a savvy manipulator of TV news. He knows TV will capture isolated incidences of violence and transmit them to millions of viewers. Videos of violence in LA are true. But those images are incomplete and misleading. Literate news consumers can guard against such platform bias through cross-platform checks. Such checking may include consuming the same story on radio or media like the Associated Press, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times and The Washington Post. These news media don’t depend on video to attract consumers (see www.DavidDozierBooks.com and www.linkedin.com/in/david-dozier-576b684/).
