Competing Media Agendas Over Trump’s Indictment
INTERVIEW ON THE PRICE OF BUSINESS SHOW, MEDIA PARTNER OF THIS SITE.
Recently Kevin Price, Host of the nationally syndicated Price of Business Show, interviewed David Dozier who is a leading media authority.
Regarding the coverage of Donald J. Trump’s March 30th indictment on 34 felony charges in NYC, different news organizations construct conflicting media “agendas.” The media are not powerful at telling us what to think (our opinions), but the news does influence what we think about (what we consider important). In examining news and commentary about the indictment, we see different news media “agendas” emerging from conservative and liberal media. Conservative/libertarian media tend to focus on (1) the alleged weaknesses of the district attorney’s case (“bookkeeping error”), (2) the political motivation behind the indictments, (3) the indictment allegedly makes Trump a stronger Presidential candidate and (4) widespread hatred of Trump yields seemingly contradictory public opinions. Liberal media tend to focus on (1) the severity of the felony charges against Trump, (2) Trump’s “unhinged” responses to the indictment that may incite violence, (3) the impact of the criminal charges on the loyalty of Trump’s base and (4) muted public protests over the charges. While the basic fact (Trump’s indictment) is covered by all news media, alternative aspects of the case receive different emphases, depending on the news organization’s liberal/conservative orientation (see DavidDozierBooks.com).
