When May a Professor Use the N-Word?
INTERVIEW ON THE PRICE OF BUSINESS SHOW, MEDIA PARTNER OF THIS SITE.
Recently Kevin Price, Host of the nationally syndicated Price of Business Show, interviewed David Dozier who is a leading media authority.
If you are a Latino professor at San Diego State University, the answer is never. In March, the university abruptly jerked philosophy professor J. Angelo Corlett from two classes he was teaching. These courses help adult students understand the meaning and use of racial slurs, as well as develop their critical thinking skills. In doing so, he used the N-word. If there ever was a clear-cut case for using the N-word in class, these courses clearly fit the bill. Fueled by social media, some angry, misinformed students pressured cowardly administrators to “reassign” Dr. Corlett in mid-semester. Is it okay to use the N-word in a college class? That depends on context. University communities are struggling to establish new norms around the use and misuse of racial slurs. Good! But new norms are best built from the ground up—through gentle persuasion. Destroying free speech and academic freedom is hypocritical and dangerous. See www.DavidDozierBooks.com.
