ABC Fights Trump’s Censorship—for Now

INTERVIEW ON THE PRICE OF BUSINESS SHOW, MEDIA PARTNER OF THIS SITE.
Recently Kevin Price, Host of the nationally syndicated Price of Business Show, interviewed David Dozier who is a leading media authority.

On a recent Price of Business show, Host Kevin Price interviewed Dr. David Dozier. He’s a professor emeritus in the journalism school at San Diego State University. They discussed ABC’s recent accusation that the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) which Trump controls is abusing its regulatory authority to censor content that Trump doesn’t like. In May, ABC (owned by Walt Disney Co.) filed a complaint with the FCC, charging regulators with exerting a “chilling effect” on news coverage. This stems from the daytime news-talk show, The View. The show often has liberal guests, but conservatives are invited, too. ABC’s news division produces the show. The FCC seeks to enforce the antiquated “equal time provision” on The View. However, Trump’s FCC makes no similar efforts with conservative programs. ABC has hired Paul D. Clement to lead litigation against the FCC. Clement was solicitor general in the George W. Bush administration. He is described as America’s most experienced Supreme Court litigator. This suggests that ABC intends to fight the FCC all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. Or not. In the past, ABC has capitulated to Trump’s demands. ABC/Disney has a lot to lose. The FCC controls TV station licenses; ABC-Disney owns eight TV stations. Trump appointed Brendan Carr, the current FCC chair. When Trump dislikes news or commentary on broadcast media, he attacks it on social media. Carr then quickly threatens the broadcast licenses of outlets that offend Trump. Only one Democrat (Anna Gomez) sits on the 5-member Commission. She has accused Trump’s weaponized FCC of a “sustained, coordinated campaign of censorship and control.” (1) (See www.DavidDozierBooks.com and www.linkedin.com/in/david-dozier-576b684/)
