Trump’s Troopers Knock on Doors To Censor Emails

On a recent Price of Business show, Host Kevin Price interviewed Dr. David Dozier. He’s a professor emeritus in the journalism school at San Diego State University. They discussed another effort by the Trump administration to suppress free speech. Like many Americans, David Streever was outraged when federal agents gunned down two American citizens while they were peacefully protesting President Trump’s brutal crackdown on immigrants in Minneapolis. And like many Americans, he decided to protest the Minneapolis killings by firing off an email in January to Todd M. Lyons, then head of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The angry email called Lyons a “monstrous human being.” Streever also called Lyons “America’s Reinhard Heydrich,” a Nazi under Hitler who ran the secret police. Heydrich’s nickname? The “butcher.” Streever’s email was protesting government violence. Price and Dozier inspected it. Nowhere in the email did Streever threaten violence. How did Trump’s troopers reply? Two Department of Homeland Security (DHS) agents showed up at his home door. They wanted him to sign a WARNING NOTICE that states, “YOU MAY BE IN VIOLATION OF FEDERAL LAW. In the notice, the ICE letter implies that Streever’s email may have violated state and federal laws. Further, if he continues to send such emails, the signed notice could be used against him in court. Since Streever was out of the U.S. at the time, a DHS agent tracked him down at the hotel where he and his daughter stayed briefly upon their return. On July 6, the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) filed suit in federal court on Streever’s behalf. The suit seeks to stop such unconstitutional acts by ICE. According to FIRE, “Americans have a clear right to criticize government officials. When federal agents come to your door and ask you to stop engaging in political speech, it is an act of intimidation that the Constitution doesn’t tolerate.” We agree.
