INTERVIEW ON THE PRICE OF BUSINESS SHOW, MEDIA PARTNER OF THIS SITE.
Recently Kevin Price, Host of the nationally syndicated Price of Business Show, interviewed Alex Brill.
Price and Alex Brill of [www.aei.org]AEI discuss one of President-Elect Trump’s big passions these days — having Canada become the 51st state! Republican Trump seems to have forgotten which party will be the big beneficiary of such a move.
Price and Brill both agree the Democrats would win if Canada would become the 51st state of the United States.
If Canada were to become the 51st state, the Democrats would certainly be the primary beneficiaries in terms of political alignment and electoral advantages. Here’s why:
1. Political and Cultural Alignment
Canada tends to lean more progressive on many social and economic issues compared to the United States. Policies like universal healthcare, strong environmental protections, and robust social safety nets align more closely with Democratic Party values than Republican values.
2. Demographics and Voting Patterns
If Canadians were enfranchised as U.S. citizens, their voting patterns would likely favor Democrats. Canadian provinces overwhelmingly support left-leaning parties in their elections, which could translate into a significant Democratic advantage in federal U.S. elections.
3. Electoral College Impact
Canada has a population of about 40 million, comparable to California. If it were added as a state, it would gain substantial representation in the House of Representatives and therefore a significant number of Electoral College votes. These votes would likely go to Democratic presidential candidates.
4. Senate Shift
As a single state, Canada would receive two Senate seats. Given Canada’s progressive tendencies, these seats would almost certainly go to Democrats, altering the balance of power in the Senate.
5. Policy Implications:
Incorporating Canada would amplify the Democratic Party’s ability to push progressive policies, including climate change initiatives, healthcare reform, and labor protections, due to Canada’s more progressive baseline.
