5 Reasons Why the World Needs More Women in Politics
The past few years have seen women rise to power in the U.S. and throughout the world. They have made quite a difference politically. So let’s elect more women!
While many people believe that modern society has achieved equality, research shows otherwise.
While it’s true that women’s rights groups made major strides in the past century, women continue to lack adequate representation in government. In fact, women occupy only 26% of the U.S. Senate and have even less representation in the House of Representatives.
But why is this so bad? Why should the United States and the world elect more women leaders?
Keep reading to learn about five reasons why getting more women in politics is never a bad idea.
1. Women Are Not a Minority
Women make up half of the world’s population, which means that they aren’t a minority. For institutions to be democratic and legitimate, women therefore need to hold positions of power.
A law-making group that has the representation of both women and men will be better able to respond to the needs of all citizens, as opposed to those of only some.
2. They Bring Needed Perspectives
For far too long, men have held unilateral political power. This means that laws and policies have naturally favored men, as they are the ones making them.
Adding in women from different and diverse backgrounds helps bring in new, much-needed perspectives. Besides, what do men know about topics like abortion?
3. Women Make Great Leaders
Although everyone’s leadership style is different, the fact remains that many women make great leaders. In fact, they often bring a wider variety of beneficial characteristics to positions of power, including empathy, humility, and self-awareness.
All of those traits are ones that the United States and other countries need now more than ever as they’ll help improve society and get things done.
4. They Help Eliminate Discriminatory Laws
It took more than a hundred years after the signing of the Constitution for women to be able to vote in the United States, and the rest of the century to eliminate many other types of legal barriers. Who led the marches? Women, with men at their sides.
By electing women to power, you expedite social movements and progressive change, all of which society needs.
5. Women Give Other Women a Voice
Far too often, society encourages women to sit down and be quiet. But by seeing female politicians, policy makers, and businesswomen, women realize that it’s okay to step outside of traditional social constraints.
The United States will soon have its first woman vice president, sending a much-needed message to women across the world that times are changing, and anything is possible.
The World Needs More Women in Politics
As the world continues to become more progressive, many countries across the world now have women in politics for the first time. Far from being a bad thing, getting more women elected into political offices is necessary if people hope to have a truly fair and equal society.
