Going Independent Is a Savvy Move for Arizona Senator Kyrsten Sinema

Arizona Senator Kyrsten Sinema (I-AZ) recently announced that she was leaving the Democratic party and would from henceforth identify as an independent. As for what that means for the balance of power in the United States Senate, Sinema wouldn’t answer that directly, but all signs point to her choosing to caucus with the Democrats thus allowing them to still maintain a one seat advantage. Many on the left including congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Bernie Sanders applauded her decision as they believe it will allow them the chance to elect a more progressive senator in her place. Entertainment executive, producer and lawyer Warren D. Robinson says not so fast to that line of thinking, “I think it was a very smart move on her part because she was definitely going to face a tough primary that she may have lost.” Says Robinson, “I think she has actually made it harder, if not impossible, for a more progressive democrat to win that seat now; Arizona is a swing state that has more registered Republicans and Independents than they do Democrats and unlike a progressive challenger Sinema can draw from all three.” Robinson makes the point that not only will Arizona voters have to decide who to back, so will the national Democratic party. In the end, however, he thinks Sinema’s reelection may ultimately come down to Republicans. “The key question is who do Republicans nominate.” Robinson says, “If they come out of the primaries with a far right candidate, much like they did this cycle, Sinema is moderate enough to garner a significant amount of moderate republican votes especially in the suburbs around Phoenix; However if republicans come out with a more moderate candidate of their own then Sinema and her Democratic challenger may split the democratic votes and give this seat back to the Republicans which is why the national party has a tough decision to make here as well. Either way, this was a very Savvy move from Senator Sinema.”
