War on Facts by Autocrats and Dictators

On a recent Price of Business show, Host Kevin Price interviewed Dr. David Dozier. He’s a retired professor of journalism at San Diego State University. They discussed the Aug 10 targeted assassination of an Al Jazeera reporter in Gaza by the Israeli military. The killing is a stark example of the ongoing war on facts by autocrats and dictators. Israel’s excuse? Reporter Anas al-Sharif was a “terrorist” on the Hamas payroll. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) offered no concrete evidence that al-Sharif worked for Hamas. The IDF offered no justification for the other five journalists killed in the bombing. Netanyahu lies when he claims that there’s no starvation in Gaza. Putin lies when he justifies Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, because neo-Nazis and drug addicts control the Ukrainian government. Trump lies when he claims Biden stole 2020 Presidential election from him. Free speech and a free press are the best guardrails against lying autocrats and dictators. Sadly, bad actors are eroding press freedom globally and in America. Headquartered in Paris, Reporters Without Borders (Reporters Sans Frontiéres or RSF in French) is a non-partisan, non-profit organization that tracks threats to press freedom globally. In 2025, RSF reports that 24 reporters have been killed. Another 523 are imprisoned. The RSF provides an index of press freedom globally (https://rsf.org/en/index). Of the 180 nations ranked, press freedom is the highest in Norway. The USA? We are ranked 57th globally. Israel is ranked 112. Russia is ranked 171. RSF states that America “is experiencing its first significant and prolonged decline in press freedom in modern history, and Donald Trump’s return to the presidency is greatly exacerbating the situation.” (see www.DavidDozierBooks.com and www.linkedin.com/in/david-dozier-576b684/).
