The Supreme Court’s Decisions Seem To Be in Step With Voters
INTERVIEW ON THE PRICE OF BUSINESS SHOW, MEDIA PARTNER OF THIS SITE.
Recently Kevin Price, Host of the nationally syndicated Price of Business Show, interviewed Batya Ungar-Sargon.
Price and Ungar-Sargon discuss Affirmative Action and other recent and significant Supreme Court decisions.
According to the Washington Post, contrary to the Democrats’ vocal opposition, recent Supreme Court decisions on affirmative action, gay weddings, and student loan debt forgiveness generally align with public sentiment, reflecting a significant level of support. Newsweek Opinion Editor Batya Ungar-Sargon echoed a similar view.
One of the most notable rulings pertained to affirmative action, limiting the use of race in college admissions. Surprisingly, numerous polls indicate that a majority of Americans back the idea of banning race considerations in admissions for colleges and universities. Even within the Democratic and Black American communities, a considerable portion supports such a ban.
Similarly, the Supreme Court’s decision on gay weddings, allowing businesses to refuse services based on religious objections, has received mixed public opinion. Some polls showed an even split on this issue, while others indicated support for businesses’ right to refuse services, particularly when framed in the context of personal or religious objections.
Regarding student loan debt forgiveness, while initial polls favored various levels of forgiveness, more recent surveys displayed a more balanced divide. Some Americans support President Biden’s plan, while others express reservations about the extent of the forgiveness and its implications.
In the realm of state lawmakers’ power over election issues, the Supreme Court’s rejection of the “independent state legislature theory” has found support among those who have expressed an opinion. While polling on this matter is limited, those who have voiced their stance have mostly opposed the notion of state legislatures holding unchecked power over federal election policy.
Overall, it appears that the Supreme Court’s approach to the recent issues brought before it is largely in harmony with the sentiments of the American public. While Democrats may remain critical of these decisions, the level of public support indicates that the court’s rulings have resonated positively with a significant portion of the population.
