Media Should Pressure Biden To Vacate Federal Death Sentences

Joe Biden’s obligation to commute all federal death penalty cases to life in prison. In the weeks ahead, Joe Biden has a moral obligation to do the right thing. The news media has an important role as the “Fourth Estate” to force Biden’s hand. Currently, 40 people are awaiting execution on federal death row. In the final six months of his last term, Donald Trump executed 13 federal prisoners. In contrast, all 50 states executed only 24 people in 2023. Trump will continue to kill in his second term because 68 percent of Republicans favor the death penalty. After Biden’s sweeping pardon of his felonious son, he ought to apply that same mercy to others. The death penalty is a peripheral issue for most Americans. But when probed the right way (“The penalty for murder should be (a) the death penalty or (b) life imprisonment with absolutely no possibility of parole”), the majority of Americans favor life imprisonment. Joe Biden’s record on human rights is spotty at best. In 1994, he favored executions, co-authoring the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act that radically expanded the federal death penalty. In 2020, Biden said he opposed the death penalty. Over the last four years, his justice department continues to seek the federal death penalty in sensational cases. In the weeks ahead, Biden may do nothing at all. As a “third way” career politician, Biden always panders to the mob. Most likely outcome?
